FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Renewable Energy Co-Op in Klickitat CountyPossibilities abound at groups first meeting02/09/2007 -- A small band of people gathered at the WSU Learning Center in Goldendale, WA to brainstorm about forming a renewable energy Co-Op. One of the first questions was, "what's a co-op?" and the answers seemed to be limited only by our imagination. The world of renewable energy is growing fast and members of Klickitat county want to make sure they are a part of it. "We have big wind coming in from the outside but we want to put renewable energy to work for the people of this county - on our roofs and in our gas tank," commented Patrick Cramer of Goldendale. The group was mainly formed out of interested individuals who attended a WSU Renewable Energy Seminar in August. Chris Cassidy of USDA renewable energy department told the group about the power of co-ops in achieving grants from his department. A co-op not only strengthens the ability to get grants but helps to pool an amazing array of interests, talents and connections. Ideas discussed included: manufacturing bio-fuels with locally grown crops, educating people about renewable energy, helping co-op members and low income families afford alternative sources of power through grants and group buying power, getting solar power on our schools and municipal buildings, encouraging emerging technologies in RE to locate in Klickitat county, and advocating for RE on a political level. The new group plans to meet again in the next couple of weeks to discuss practicalities of forming a co-op and a possible name. Anyone interested in joining in on the discussion should contact Tim Shatraw of the WSU Learning Center (509) 773-5620 or Jonathan Lewis at Seraphim Electric Co. 509-773-3806.
